If you havent already, you will be hearing a great deal
about ADLs as you examine care home options.
Here is a quick overview of the Activities of Daily Living.
Instrumental Activities. These are considered the higher
or more complex level of activities. People with dementing
illnesses tend to lose most of these abilities rather early
in the disease process (see Stages). In almost any Assisted
Living level care home these services would be provided as
a normal part of the care routine. The activities are:
Doing Heavy Household Chores
Doing Light Housekeeping
Using the Phone
Managing Money
Preparing Meals
Doing the Shopping
Taking Medications
Using Transportation
Functional Activities. These are the more basic
activities of life. People with dementia will need ever increasing
help in virtually all of these areas. Assisted Living Care
Homes will vary tremendously in the degree to which they will
provide assistance. Examining each care home you consider
in terms of the specific services they offer in these areas
is extremely important. The basic activities are:
Bathing
Dressing
Grooming (shaving, hair, teeth, etc.)
Eating
Toileting, Urinary and Bowel
Walking
Transfer (getting out of bed or up from chair)
When you work with ALZCARE® in the placement process
we establish the current care needs and then help you select
on the basis of probable future care needs as well. See our
Evaluating Assisted Living Facilities page for help in understanding
the evaluation process.
